Carrier Sales Representative

Position Summary:

As a Carrier Sales Representative, you will be the main point of contact with carriers, negotiating freight rates, RMIS updates/set-ups and onboarding new carriers. The Carrier Sales Representative will liaison between the coordinators, teams, and carriers to resolve issues as they may arise. You will work with managers and teams on all RFQ’s and annual contracted freight rates. You must have strong organizational and multitasking skills. You should be able to work in a fast-paced environment, have excellent communication and customer service skills, and possess critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Build and maintain relationships with carriers to establish long-term partnerships.
  • Work with accounting to update carriers’ insurance or soon to expire insurance.
  • Develop and maintain a database of carriers to select from for each shipment.
  • Optimize shipping routes and methods to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
  • Attend industry events and tradeshows to network and stay up to date on industry trends.
  • Provide training or guidance to other team members on industry best practices and procedures.
  • Proactively looking for opportunities to match our available loads to partner carriers’ capacity schedules.
  • Negotiating rates with carriers to maximize profitability.
  • Update carrier profiles in CargoWise to ensure all contacts, phone numbers and emails are accurate.
  • Monitoring trends and changes in the industry and educating the team about fluctuations that could impact service and/or rates.
  • Notifying the sales representative of any competitor actions that may be drawing our customer’s business away.
  • Proactively identifying potential problems and resolving them before they escalate.
  • Providing costs for ad hoc, contractual and RFP freight upon request.
  • Work with the sales and/or account management team on any complications with loads/ carriers.
  • Work with the accounting team to resolve any carrier payment issues related to invoice discrepancies.
  • Updating and distributing DNU carrier list
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Education Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline preferred.

Required Skills & Knowledge:

  • Proven work experience in sales or customer service in the logistics and transportation industry.
  • Preferred 2-3 years of freight brokerage/dispatching experience, preferred.
  • Experience in a fast-paced sales environment an asset.
  • Working knowledge of transportation management software (i.e. CargoWise) is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Availability to travel as needed.
  • Previous experience using Load Boards, ex; LoadLink
  • Knowledge of multi-state geography
