Intermodal is the movement of freight in containers or trailers over two or more modes of transportation such as air, rail, truck, and ship. There are four common modes - Truck, Rail, Sea & Air.
Most cargo can be shipped via intermodal (excluding personal belonging and live animals). Common examples of frequent cargo types include: electronics, agricultural products, clothing, vehicles, machinery and construction materials.
Live load means the shipper loads their own freight into empty containers while the drive waits. In contrary, Drop and Load is when the driver drops empty containers at the shipper's location and picks up already loaded containers (used for large-volume shippers who turn multiple containers per day).
COFC (Container on Flat Car): freight is loaded in a shipping container, then the container is removed from the chassis and placed on a flat rail car (popular option as it allows for stacking). TOFC (Trailer on Flat Car): cargo is loaded into a trailer (instead of a container), and the trailer is loaded onto a flat car.
Absolutely! Because a multiple modes of transport are used, the total weight limit for an intermodal shipment needs to consider chassis limits. When moving over the road, (including container, chassis, and truck) the weight limit is 80,000 lbs. In order to stay within the allowable range (once the loaded onto the chassis) the recommended total cargo weight should be under 43,500 lbs.
